Steve Davenport –  Lead Pastor

Pastor Steve, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, received his B.A Degree from Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida, and his Masters of Divinity degree from Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta. Carl Godwin – Pastor Emeritus

A native of Lincoln, Carl Godwin is the founding pastor of Calvary Community Church and led Calvary until August 1st, 2021. Having accepted Christ as his personal Savior as a child, Carl felt God’s calling to the pastorate at the age of 16.

Carl and his wife Gayle met during college and have been married over 48 years. Following graduation, they set out on a journey to observe some of America’s fastest-growing churches. During this time, they both began to sense God’s leading to begin a church in Lincoln. Carl & Gayle have three children and thirteen grandchildren.  

Cleve Smith – Executive Pastor

Cleve Smith grew up in Panama City, Florida where he learned to survive bitter winters that occasionally dipped to 35 degrees! At Tennessee Temple University he received his BA in Bible and developed a passion for church ministry. Not to mention his passion for his wife Kim! Before coming to Lincoln, Cleve served at churches in West Virginia and North Carolina.

Cleve and Kim came to Calvary in February 2005 (during one of our record-breaking cold spells!). Here at Calvary, Cleve is responsible for overseeing the adult ministries. Cleve and Kim have four adult children. Contact Pastor Cleve at

Mitch Larson – Worship Ministries

Mitch Larson was born and raised in North Dakota and western Nebraska.  He attended University of Nebraska at Kearney where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music.

After teaching music in Iowa for nine years, Mitch followed God’s leading into full-time worship ministry. In 2000, Mitch, along with his wife, Leisa, and four children made the move from Indiana to Lincoln and Calvary. In addition to leading the congregation in powerful and inspiring weekly worship, Mitch has discovered a new joy in entertaining his three grandchildren. Contact Pastor Mitch at

Shane Sundermann – Children Ministries 

Shane Sundermann started attending Calvary Community Church with his family when he was ten years old. After attending Parkview Christian School, he received his Bachelor’s Degree from Calvary Bible College in Kansas City. He met his wife Debi in college and they moved back to Lincoln in 1999.

Shane started serving as children’s pastor in 2000.  Shane has assembled a staff of volunteers that excite and encourage kids in their walk with Christ through the use of drama, games and music to make the Bible come alive.  Shane and Debi have four children. Contact Pastor Shane at

Scott Wiles – Discipleship and Connect Pastor

Pastor Scott was first introduced to Calvary Community Church in 1999 when he was invited to join the faculty of Parkview Christian School as English teacher. His spiritual growth while attending Calvary led him to follow the call of Christ into pastoral ministry.

Upon graduating from Grace University in May 2008, Scott welcomed the opportunity to join Calvary’s staff. Scott and his wife Karen have four children that remind them daily of God’s lovingkindness. Contact Pastor Scott at

Leisa Larson – Discipleship and Small Groups Director

After earning a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication and Theatre Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney she taught for several years at an all-girls high school, before becoming a full-time mom to four children. Since then, she has added mother-in-law and grandma titles and is enjoying all the love those roles bring.

Leisa came to Calvary in 2000, with her husband, Mitch, and joined the staff team in the spring of 2011. She loves serving full-time at Calvary, where she gets to help people connect personally with the God of the Bible. Contact Leisa at

Karen Wintermute – Administrative Assistant

Karen was born and raised in Grand Island, NE.  She met her husband, Rick, when he tagged along with some friends to a Christian singles events.  They have been married since 1986 and have two adult children, Erik & Kristi.

Karen became the Administrative Assistant in March 2017, after her offer of help got Jeff and the staff thinking of her in a full-time position instead of part-time help.  Contact Karen at

Nick Wiles – Youth Ministries

Nick has been attending Calvary Community Church since his family moved to Lincoln in 1999, in other words, his whole life. He was led to Christ in Pastor Shane’s kids ministry, and graduated from Parkview Christian School. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Studies from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Since graduation, he married his wife Elizabeth, and joined the staff of Calvary. He co-leads ministries for students 6th-12th grade; encouraging them to grow in their relationship with Christ through the Calvary Youth Group Community. Contact Nick at

Nate Godwin – Youth Ministries

Nate grew up at Calvary Community Church and graduated from Parkview Christian School where he now coaches basketball. He is married to his wife Tanya and has three kids. He co-leads ministries for students 6th-12th grade; encouraging them to grow in their relationship with Christ through the Calvary Youth Group Community. He also oversees the building scheduling and maintenance.

Hugo Orellana – Hispanic Ministries

Hugo and his wife Janet Orellana, came to Lincoln in 2001 from El Salvador with their two sons, Alex and Edgar and daughter, Mency, was added to their family is 2003.  Hugo now serves as Spanish Bilingual Liaison at the Lincoln Public Schools ELL Welcome Center.

“For me is a great privilege to serve as an Interpreter to my Hispanic Community, to the new immigrants and refugee families in Lincoln,” commented Pastor Hugo.  “One of the ways that I am happy to serve my community is to interpret and deliver the message of the “Good News” in our beautiful Español language this Christmas.”

Calvary Community Church offers a bilingual service every Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm. There is children’s ministry during the service and a time of fellowship for families follows each service.
